Unfortunately, this is not the first time we've seen bigotry try to take down queer celebration in theatre, and it probably won't be our last. We stand with the cast and crew of "Shrek the Musical" and their decision to continue flying the Pride flag in their production, and condemn the statement of town officials that they have a "responsibility to remain neutral." This was not a neutral move, this move made a very loud and clear statement. We make a commitment to our audiences and artists that we will follow the Sasquatch example in our own productions, and always stand up for you and fight for you to the best of our ability. No amount of money/sponsorship/city pressure would ever sway us from our values. To our LGBTQIA+ friends, you deserve to create, thrive, and share stories and joy, and we are with you. Thanks to the cast and crew over at Sasquatch for reminding us all that every voice counts, and in theatre we should be particularly comfortable with using ours. Y'all, I was so thrilled to catch "Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again" by Alice Birch and produced by The Moot Point Project. This show was a raw exploration of feminine rage and BOY HOWDY did it land with me. My own little rage demon was clicking her heels with glee. It felt like an expression of something that is hard to voice, but that we all understand. It lived in this beautiful space where I was surprisingly unsurprised by the moments/scenes I was watching, and yet they felt so vitally important to share at the same time. This production was sharp and full of powerhouse performances, partifularly by the three actors portraying the women on stage. The direction really nailed it - honestly, I was struggling not to smile through the last two Acts because I was so thrilled with the pacing and emotional build. The minimalist set was well utilized and dynamic. And without giving away too much, the audience configurations were well crafted and truly enhanced the emotional journey. Reverse doughnut/amoeba/meatball forever. Honestly, nothing but good things from me on this one. If you can, definitely try and catch it! Playing through Sunday the 25. In that time we have... -Produced 4 shows, 2 of which were World Premiers, and 1 which had it's first fully staged pro production -Did 6 FREE Pints & Plays readings for 6 new scripts, all by women/NB playwrights -As a team, wrote 3 original scripts -Worked with 9 venues/bars -Brought onstage 132 bottles of beer, 42 boxes of apple juice, 32 blood packets, 28 slices of pizza, 16 balloons, 14 pudding cups, 8 gelatin hearts, 2 tubs of cheesepuffs -Sang Carol of the Bells 8 times -Threw 1 typewriter and 1 boombox off the roof -Sold 942 affordable tickets under $20 -Sold out 3 performances -Worked with 32 extremely talented and kind theatre artists and comics who helped us make all of this happen! UnLeashed is a small, woman-run theatre company intent on building a communal sense of play. We create space for the making of play and for plays in the making, but all focused on YOU, the audience. We focus on new works, both new to the stage but also maybe just new to the audience - something that isn’t often staged, maybe something a little fringe or a little silly. We believe in the power of play and invites both artists and audiences to experience joy, laughter, pain and connection in the stories that remind us of why we enjoy being human. We invite you to grab your friends, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy the play.
